Biometrics like fingerprints or vein patterns are very well suited for the identification of individuals and for combating identity fraud, because it tightly couples an identity to a person. Fingerprint matching ensures more secure identity checks than, for example, standard ID-cards, passports, passwords, tokens or security badges that don’t use biometrics.

Biometrics are considered private and personal information and unlawful access to this information may lead to identity fraud and other misuse of the data. The new ISO standard: “ISO 24745 Biometric information protection” is the most advanced standardization guideline to address the privacy and security requirements for biometric deployments. It specifies amongst others:

  •  Irreversibility and confidentiality: prevent identity theft by protecting the biometric information in an irreversible way using the highest key-less cryptographic security standards.
  • Renewability: allow for a widespread usage of the same fingerprint by using renewable and revocable biometric templates.
  • Unlinkability: prevent “function creep” by making it impossible to link biometric data across different applications.

The priv-ID BioHASH® Solution is a Privacy Enhancing Technology (PET) that satisfies these requirements for irreversibility, renewability and unlinkability. BioHASH® eliminates privacy and security concerns in biometric card deployments.
